French Ligue 1 returned in sublime fashion as an array of goals was on fleek with all teams returning stronger and goals galore was the order of the day.
Olympique Lyonnais started the season with a visit from new boys AC Ajaccio and had to survive a scare when they were red carded in the 27th minute to hold out 2-1 winners after they had gone 2-0 ahead before the 25th minute, a penalty from Thomas Mangani proved to be only a consolation for Ajaccio as Lacazette and Tete ensured Lyon were clear winners on the day.
AS Monaco and Paris Saint Germain were the teams who played on Saturday and they both got off to flying starts in their respective away fixtures. Krepin Diatta and Sofiane Diop were the heroes of the Monaco team in a heated affair with Strasbourg who themselves had a goal thanks to a Habibu Diallo which proved to be little too late with As Monaco carrying the day 2-1. Paris Saint Germain reminded the whole of France why they were worthy champions as they began their title defense with a 5-0 battering of Clermont Foot, heading into the match without talisman Kylian Mbappe raised a few eyebrows but after a 9th minute strike by Neymar came in, the result was only going to go one way as Achraf Hakimi, Marquinhos and a Lionel Messi double ensured the difference between both teams reflected in the game.
Aaron Ramsey marked his first match as an OGC Nice player with a goal as he helped his team to a 1-1 draw with Toulouse who had earlier gone ahead thanks to a Thijs Dallinga strike. Montpellier and Troyes had an exciting match on display with 4 first half goals setting the tone as scores were 2-2 at half time but it was Montpellier who ran off 3-2 winners on the day with a Teji Savanier double and Sainte-Luce goal enough to hand the win for Montpellier while goals from Mama Balde and Florian Tardieu consolation goals for Troyes.
Florian Sotoca and his RC Lens side reigned supreme on the day versus Stade Brestois 3-2 with Sotoca scoring a Hattrick and even missing a penalty in what was a brilliant day from the forward, despite being 3 goals down, Brest tried to rally back with two late goals by Haris Belkelba and Romain Del Castillo but it was all in vain with Lens running away with the victory. LOSC Lille started the season brilliantly with a comprehensive 4-1 whitewash of new boys AJ Auxerre with a Jonathan David Brace coupled with Benjamin Andre and Akim Zedadka goals ensuring a goal from the away team by Gaetan Charbonnier proving to be a consolation for the side.
Angers and Nantes engaged in the only score less scoreline of the day with a 0-0 stalemate on the cards for both teams in a match Angers should have won if they had taken their chances. Lorient marked their return to Top Flight Football with an away win at Stade Rennes thanks to a Arthur Theate Own Goal with the team making their return a memorable one. The last match of Matchday 1 featured Olympique Marseille versus Stade Reims in what was a routine 4-1 victory for the home team, a Wout Waes own goal set things in the perfect mood as the floodgates were flung open with new boys Luis Suarez and Arsenal Loanee Nuno Tavares on the score sheet for Marseille who were pegged back at 3-1 by another former arsenal player Folarin Balogun on the scoreboard for Reims as Matchday 1 of the French Ligue 1 finished in style.
