The Spanish La Liga heads into the 21st matchday this coming weekend and its Barcelona who lead the standings above fierce rivals Real Madrid who they are 8 points clear off with momentum on their side, they look on course to claim their 27th crown this season.
In what has been a remarkable season for Xavi Hernandez and his Barcelona team, they look set to take the League title home, they have managed only one loss in the entire La Liga season and have only conceded once at the Camp Nou this season as they look thoroughly invincible this season. Real Madrid occupy 2nd spot, 8 points behind their rivals and would be wondering what went wrong in recent times especially since they were the ones seated on the 1st position with a 5 point advantage not too long ago, they lost to Mallorca on game week 20 as Barcelona fended off a Sevilla challenge to win 3-0 and have a healthy advantage going into game week 21. Real Sociedad and Atletico Madrid make up the Top 4 in La Liga with Imanol Alguacil side 6 points behind second placed Real Madrid and 4 points ahead of Diego Simeone and his Atletico Madrid squad who have failed to live up to expectations this term with series of disappointing results keeping them even far off from any chances of winning the La Liga.
Rayo Vallecano are having a swell time thus far, with 3 wins in their last 5 games, they find themselves in 5th place and just 3 points behind Atletico Madrid in 4th place as they would hope to keep up the good run of form while eyeing an European berth next season. Villarreal and Real Betis share the same points on the table as they are locked on 31 points with Manuel Pelligrini and his Betis side behind on goal difference, He would be disappointed after seeing his team lose 3 times in their last 4 matches and on the run of 2 consecutive losses, They are just 4 points from the Top 4 and with more to play for this season, they have over 18 matches to get their stride back. Also locked on same points are Athletic Club and Osasuna who are both on 29 points after 20 games, Athletic Bilbao shook off a run of 3 consecutive losses to win over the weekend against Cadiz and would look to maintain that form moving forward if they have hopes of returning to any of the European competitions next season.
RCD Mallorca stunned the football world this past weekend when they beat Real Madrid 1-0 in what showed a resolute show of defending masterclass, the win made it 3 wins in their last 5 games and that has shot them up right to 10th place on the La Liga standing. Girona’s 1-0 win over hapless Valencia ensured they moved to 11th place while being chased by one of La Liga’s most in form team Celta Vigo who have picked up 10points from their last 5 games including a 2 game winning streak as their previous relegation worries look to be in the past.
Real Valladolid stunned Real Sociedad at the Reale Arena to make it back to back wins for the side after beating Valencia by the same scoreline the week before. Almeria’s loss to Rayo Vallecano this game week meant they have picked up just 5 points in their last 5 matches and are being chased by duo of Espanyol and Sevilla who are both on 21 points. Espanyol have pulled off a strings of consecutive results with just 1 loss in their last 5 games and picking up 8 points in that time, they are ahead of Sevilla on goal difference with Sevilla enduring one of their worse runs in recent times languishing in 16th place, just two points above the dreaded drop zone. They have picked up 3 wins in their last 5 games with the new coach tasked to getting them back to the top half of the table.
Valencia continue to fall deeper into the relegation zone with just 1 point taken in their last 5 games, they are 1 point above 18th placed Cadiz who themselves are finding the League too tough, they have picked up 7 points in their last 5 games and would hope to get back on the winning side after their loss to Athletic Club at San Mames. Getafe ended a run of 4 consecutive losses in the League with a 1-1 draw at the Wanda Metropolitano as they stole a point at stoppage time to ensure Atletico Madrid fail to get a win from the game. They are just 2 points away from safety and would hope that the confidence in the Atletico match gets them back to winning ways as their plan of escaping relegation begins in earnest. Elche picked up their very first win in this La Liga season when they defeated Villarreal 3-1 to finally end their unwanted record, with 9 points gained in 20 matches, they know they face an uphill task if they are to remain in La Liga next season.
10 points separate the 10th placed team and the relegation zone showing it is going to be a tight fight between all teams till the very end, for league leaders FC Barcelona, they know the league is theirs to lose with an 8 point gap very beneficial if they are to steal the La Liga title back from Real Madrid this season.
