SPANISH LA LIGA REVIEW AND PREVIEW (MD 2-7)

The Spanish La Liga season has started with a series of good performances from the top two favorites this season and with the El Clasico nearly upon us in over a fortnight’s time, we do a bit of catchup on what has been happening in Spain’s Top Division.

  • ATHLETIC CLUB BILBAO

Athletic Club have had a great start to the season and have managed to rack up 12 points in their last 5 games to earn them a 4th place spot in the La Liga as they continue to ensure they keep a steady rhythm as La Liga progresses, next up is a home clash with UD Almeria in a bid to keep their European dreams in full swing.

CURRENT PPOSITION – 4TH

  • CADIZ CF

Cadiz have found the beginning of the season very hard to come by and infact had their first goal and first points of the season in a 1-0 Matchday 6 away win over Real Valladolid, they had earlier conceded 14 goals in a losing run that stretched 5 games before finally getting a win. They would hope to continue in that form unless they want to find themselves in a relegation battle.

They resume hostilities in an away clash at Espanyol who they know they have to dig really deep if they plan on getting maximum points.

One of last season’s surprise teams have tried to maintain their status this season in the league having had 2 wins and a draw with 3 losses all part of of their early season’s gameplay. Despite a spirited effort, they succumbed to a 3-2 loss to Athletic Club on Matchday 6 and would intend to returning to winning ways on their next league home fixture.

Villarreal have enjoyed life to the 2022/2023 season on a good note with exploits in Europe and Locally enough to put them within touching distance of their objectives. With just 1 loss so far this season in all competitions, they would look to mount a push for a return to the UCL or UEL spots this season with the team clearly firing on all cylinders.

Newly promoted Girona have started life in the league on a fairly good note, since Matchday 1 defeat to Valencia, they have managed to pick up 7 points from their last 5 matches and ensuring they go into Matchday 7 with 7 points to their name as they face a very stern test at the Anoeta.

Sevilla have endured a nightmarish start to the season with the team seeing just 1 win in their last 8 games on the league stage and the UCL, only Matchday five’s 3-2 away win over Espanyol poses their only win on the season as they find themselves just 1 point above the relegation zone in the early season’s proceedings. It is a run of form they would hope to stop as they face a very strong challenge in their Matchday 7 La Liga fixture.

The Basque based club found things going quite smoothly both in the League and Europa League thus far winning both games in Europe including a 1-0 defeat of Manchester United and have lost just once since Matchday two’s 4-1 home loss to Barcelona. They play newly promoted side Girona next up in the league as a win could seem them in the top four by the end of this Matchday.

It’s been a very bad start for Elche who have so far picked up one point from their opening 6 matches with Matchday two’s draw with Almeria their only point haul this season. Barcelona subjected them to a four straight losing run in La Liga as they find themselves languishing in relegation waters. They would seek to turn their season around hoping for a positive result in their next game.

Atletico Madrid would be returning from the international break fresh from the 2-1 defeat to Real Madrid in the last Matchday as they seek to return to winning ways in the league. They have now lost 2 of their last 5 games but boast of 10 points in the league as they head to the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan stadium in hopes of getting all three points against a Sevilla team that are yet to find their rhythm this season.

Osasuna have enjoyed an excellent start to the league with the team currently occupying an European spot following it’s outstanding performances this season. They would hope to continue their fine run when league hostilities resume over the weekend as they travel to the Santiago Bernabeu with hopes of putting lazy Matchday defeat to Getafe fully behind them.

  • REAL VALLADOLID

Real Valladolid fell 1-0 at home to Cadiz CF in what made it 3 straight defeats for the team who still find themselves plunging deeper into the relegation abyss. They have picked up just 4 points from an available 15 in what is slowly turning to be a bad spot to be in. They play Getafe next as they seek to redeem their season before it gets too late.

Real Betis have had a stellar campaign thus far both in Spain and The Europa League with the team losing just one (vs Real Madrid 2-1) of their 8 competitive matches. They have won 5 of 6 games on the league and that leaves them just 3 points adrift of top spot as they hope to resume their winning ways when they travel to Celta for what would be a thrilling clash.

RCD Mallorca have had an equal share of all games this season with 2 wins, 2 draws, 2 losses all part of their current campaign. After beating Almeria 1-0, they return from the international break with an interesting fixture where they host high flyers Barcelona where they know they have to be at their very best if they want to get a result from this match.

Celta Vigo have suffered back to back losses in the league with heavy defeats to Atletico Madrid (4-1) and Valencia (3-0) consigning them to a current 13th place position and 7 points to their name. They would resume league football when they welcome Real Betis to the Estadio de Balaídos as they seek to return to winning ways and avoid last season’s relegation battle fracas.

Getafe seem to have turned their season around after their disappointing start that saw them just gathering 1 point in their first four games. Their next game sees them welcome struggling Real Valladolid to their home grounds where they would be keen on making it three straight victories.

Having won just once this season and picking up a draw, Espanyol enter Matchday 7 with lots of problems on their hands, they need a win to ensure they don’t fall into the relegation zone and know they need to pick up points in the nearest future to avoid yet another relegation battle that may spell bad tidings for them this season.

Almeria have seemed to have taken their foot off the gas as the team finds themselves losing their last three matches despite starting the season quite well. They boast of the competition’s best offensive record and look like a formidable side capable of challenging for the league, they travel to San Moix to face a stern Mallorca test in which they hope to scale through unscathed.

They face Osasuna next in a home game as they look to extend their winning run to 7 consecutive games as they continue their push to successfully defend the La Liga title.
