ITALIAN SERIE A (MATCHDAY 1-8) REVIEW AND PREVIEW

The Italian Serie A is known for it’s usual theatrics and surprises as this season as started quite brightly with a notable few mentions. With the international break over, teams are jostling to get back into the league’s business as they embark on Matchday 8 of the 38 Matchday season.

  • AS ROMA

The UEFA Conference League defending champions started the 2022/2023 season on a good note but have been found wanting in terms of form over the past few gameweeks, they have managed just 2 wins in their last 5 matches and that includes a humiliating 4-0 loss to Udinese, they even have a tougher challenge as they travel to the San Siro to face Inter Milan and Jose Mourinho and his boys know they can’t afford to drop any points.

Monza didn’t quite find promotion exciting enough in the beginning part of the season after succumbing to 5 straight league losses which consigned them to 20th place as at the end of Matchday 5. Their fortunes seem to have taken a turn with an impressive showing in their last two games where they have managed a draw with Lecce and beating Juventus 1-0 to see themselves climb just 1 point from safety as they look to continue their form when the league resumes this weekend.

Newly Promoted Leece seem to have found their footings in the Serie A after opening their first two gameweeks with losses, since then they have managed just 1 loss in their last 5 games but haven’t had much luck winning either with last Matchday’s 2-1 away win over Salertinana their only full points haul this season and would hope to do better when they square off aganist fellow promoted Cremonese this weekend.

Atalanta BC are surely on the right track of returning to Europe after last season’s disappointment and sit joint first on the log level with SSC Napoli. Unlike last season, they have managed to curb most of their defensive problems with the team conceding a mere 3 goals in 7 games and are still unbeaten in the league and the team would hope to continue their fine form of this season and perhaps go all the way by lifting the Title.

Torino must have left their A-game somewhere as they have struggled to replicate the same kind of form they started the 2022/2023 league season with as the team has lost 3 of her last 4 games and dropping over 5 places down the table. There’s still lots of hope for improvement as the Ivan Juric tutored side would hope to return to winning ways when they travel to take on the current league leaders at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium.

Spezia finally managed to break a run of a 5 match winless streak with Matchday 7’s win over Sampdoria to bring their total season point haul to 8 points and still maintain a healthy status on the league’s standings. There’s still work to do if they hope on avoiding a heated relegation battle like that of last season and resume that quest when they visit the Stadio Olimpico.

They have racked up four draws and 1 win to see them in a good spot , they travel to the Mapei Stadium next in what would be a tricky encounter for them.

Udinese are surely the team to beat right now in the Serie A with the early season’s scintillating form truly a marvel. Since Game Week 1’s defeat to AC Milan, the team has gone to rack up 16 of a possible 18 points and have notched up 5 consecutive league victories that included a 4-0 defeat of AS Roma and most recently a 3-1 win over Inter Milan at the ‘Dacia Arena’. They travel to the ‘Marcantonio Bentegodi Stadium’ to take on ‘The Yellow and Blues’ outfit as they look further improve their already fine season.
