GERMAN BUNDESLIGA (MD15-19 REVIEW)

The German Bundesliga has some kind of twist to the League this season, Bayern Munich seem to be feeling the absence of prolific scorer Robert Lewandowski with ‘The Bavarians’ struggling this term for form and that explains why there are just 6 points separating the Top 6 guaranteed European spots.

Julian Nagelsmann and his Bayern Munich team have been performing below par this season and that can be seen in the German Bundesliga Table with the defending champions pulling a string of questionable performances including 3 draws at a bounce to maintain a lowly 2 point gap over second placed Union Berlin. Union Berlin have been in terrific form with 4 wins in their last 5 games, they sail comfortably on the seas that lead to Europe as chasing an UCL spot seems to be on their sights. Borussia Dortmund themselves have had a brilliant run of late with the team earning 12 points in their last 5 games to place them on 3rd place and 3 points behind 1st placed Bayern Munich and 1 point above 4th placed RB Leipzig who are unbeaten in their 5 games and would rue their chance to go ahead of Borussia Dortmund in the last game week after a goal was ruled out for offside to consign them to settle for a point. The Top 6 is completed by Eintracht Frankfurt and Freiburg who also are within touching distance with just 2points separating Freiburg from the Top 4. All clubs know they cannot afford to slip up as the race for who represents Germany at next season’s UCL intensifies.

Niko Kovac has thus far guided his VFL Wolfsburg team to the 7th place on the German Bundesliga Table with the club 5 points away from an European berth as they seek to return back to European football, they are being closely chased by SV Werder Bremen and Borussia Mochengladbach who they maintain a 1 point and 2 point lead over respectively. Werder Bremen returned back to form with back to back wins in the League after previously enduring a hard run of 3 consecutive losses and find themselves within an European reach, Borussia Mochengladbach on the other hand seem to be falling further down the table as a recent surge of poor form has seen them pick up 2 wins in their last 5 games as they sit 2 points above Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen team who also have had an abysmal season thus far, they struggle on the 10th position after gaining 24 points thus far and would hope for a change in luck if they are to make another UCL entry.

Unbeaten in their last 4 league games, FC Koln have failed to maintain a good stride as their quest to avoid relegation seems to be going in full swing, they are locked on 23 points and are 4 points above the relegation zone. Also on 23 points are Mainz who have picked up 2 losses in their last 3 games as they find themselves plunging deeper into relegation waters, they maintain a 2 point lead over 13th placed Augsburg who themselves are finding their way up the table faster being stuck in the relegation zone for two long, and with 2 wins in her last 3 games, Augsburg could very well escape relegation this season.

VFL Bochum are one of the most in form teams in the German Bundesliga with 3 wins in her last 5 games enough to propel them out of the foot of the table, they are currently on 21 points level with 14th placed Hoffenheim who are still winless in their last 5 games and picking up just a single point in that period with the team taking a skydive into the relegation zone and would drop further if they do not find a way past their poor run of form. Both teams maintain a 3 point gap over the relegation playoff zone are a further 5 point away from the relegation zone.

VFB Stuttgart occupy the relegation playoffs spot with the club failing to win any of her last 5 games in the league with their form seemingly off, they are just 2 points away from Hertha Berlin who have had a torrid time this season with the team deeply rooted in the relegation zone on the 17th position knowing fully well a change in form is their only savior unless relegation beckons. Schalke 04 have not lost in their last 2 league games but would have hoped the draws convert to wins as they seek to escape relegation in the second half of the season since returning from relegation this term.

With just 6 points separating the Top 6 teams, it all comes down to a huge battle especially given Bayern Munich weakness this season, as all teams would vie for the top prize and see if they can break the long consecutive league wins Bayern Munich has managed.
