FRENCH LIGUE 1 REVIEW AND PREVIEW (MD 2-9)

The French Ligue 1 has moved in full swing with Paris Saint Germain already stamping their authority on the League. It’s just early season and whom would take the League crown already looks sealed but for the other spots, it’s going to be a tough fight till the end. Let’s take an in depth review of what has been happening in the League.

  • FC LORIENT

Lorient have started the 2022/2023 French Ligue 1 season in a beautiful way with the team winning 6 of her first 8 games, drawing one and losing just once to RC Lens (5-2, Matchday 4). They currently occupy one of the UEFA Champions League spots and know they need more of their current form if they plan to do better than their lowly 16th place finish last season.

NEXT OPPONENT – LOSC LILLE METROPOLE

CURRENT POSITION – 3RD

  • RC LENS

RC Lens have had a stellar start to the new season with the team still being unbeaten after 8 games (W5, D3, L0) and are very on course for a European Berth given their early season form. They face their biggest challenge yet when they welcome out of form Olympique Lyonnais to the ‘Stade Bollaert-Delelis’ in a match that would surely test their unbeaten status.

FORM – WDWWWDWD

NEXT OPPONENT – OLYMPIQUE LYONNAIS

CURRENT POSITION – 4TH

  • CLERMONT FOOT 63

Clermont Foot have notched up 10 points from a possible 24 thus far and see themselves fairly safe on the League standings with the team sitting on 11th position after picking up 3 wins and 1 draw. They travel to bottom placed Ajaccio in hopes of gathering more points to be able to stay out of the relegation zone.

FORM – LWWLLWDL

NEXT OPPONENT – AC AJACCIO

CURRENT POSITION – 11TH

  • FC NANTES

The French Super Cup beaten finalists have had life this season tough for them as they have struggled to keep their heads above the water. Since the 4-0 mauling by Paris Saint Germain in the Super Cup, they have managed just 1 win in the League (3-1 win over Toulouse) and 1 win in Europe with the recent 3-0 loss to Qarabag piling more pressure on the side. Next up on the cards is a fiesty trip to the ‘Stade Louis II’.

FORM – DDLWDLLD

NEXT OPPONENT – AS MONACO

CURRENT POSITION – 15TH

  • TOULOUSE FC

Despite starting the first 3 games of the season unbeaten, Toulouse have seemed to have lost their bearings with the team poorly navigating through the League’s intricacies as they have managed just 1 win in their last 5 games (D0, L4) in what has been a worrisome state for the club. They resume the International Break with a home tie versus Montpellier as they seek to return to winning ways.

FORM – DWDLLLWL

NEXT OPPONENT – HSC MONTPELLIER

CURRENT POSITION – 12TH

  • STADE BRESTOIS

Stade Brest have had a poor run thus far in the League with the team currently winless in their last five games and picking up a win all season that has seen them firmly rooted in 19th place as they know they need to get results or they may be caught in a relegation battle frenzy in the future. They travel to the ‘Stade Abbe Deschamps’ as they bid to get all available points in this match up to climb up the table.

FORM – LDWLLLDL

NEXT OPPONENT – AJ AUXERRE

CURRENT POSITION – 19TH

  • LOSC LILLE METROPOLE

Lille has lacked consistency in this season’s League proceedings and that has seen them a staggering 9 points away from first place despite just playing 8 matches so far. They hed into Matchday 9 with an away clash to Lorient looming as they seek to build on their current 7th place standing as they know a win would push them to one of the European spots.

FORM – WDLWLWLW

NEXT OPPONENT – FC LORIENT

CURRENT POSITION – 7TH

  • AC AJACCIO

Ajaccio have surely found the Ligue 1 too hot to handle as the team has struggled to find a strong stand in the League. They have lost the most games (6) in the League, in what has seen them consigned to the 20th position on the log. Last Matchday’s 1-0 away win over Stade Brestois may have given them the right mentality to push for more points and they welcome Clermont Foot as they hope to gather all three points in front of their home crowd.

FORM – LDLLLLLW

NEXT OPPONENT – CLERMONT FOOT 63

CURRENT POSITION – 20TH

  • STADE RENNAIS FC

Rennes seem to have gotten thier groove back after an under par start to the season. They are currently unbeaten in their last six games in all competitions (W1, D1 in the Europa League) and (W2, D2 in the Ligue 1). They would hope to build on that form when they travel to winless Strasbourg as a win would keep them within touching distance of an European Berth.

FORM – LDWLWDWD

NEXT OPPONENT – RC STRASBOURG

CURRENT POSITION – 8TH

  • STADE DE REIMS

Les rouges et blancs (The Red and Whites) have not quite had the start to a season they would have hoped for as the team has struggled for points this season with just 1 win accompanied by 3 draws and 4 losses a perfect way to sum up a rather abysmal season for the team. They travel to Troyes next in what could be a tricky clash for the side.

FORM – LLDDWDLL

NEXT OPPONENT – ES TROYES AC

CURRENT POSITION – 17TH

  • SCO ANGERS

Having picked up 2 points from their first 6 games, Angers seem to have gotten it all figured out as back to back wins in the League has seen them climb off the relegation spot and into the 14th position. They host current 2nd placed and unbeaten team Olympique Marseille at the ‘Raymond Kopa Stadium’ as they seek to make it 2 wins in a row and land the first defeat on Marseille this season.

FORM – DDLLLLWW

NEXT OPPONENT – OLYMPIQUE MARSEILLE

CURRENT POSITION – 14TH

  • RC STRASBOURG

Strasbourg are still the only team who are yet to win a game in the French Ligue 1 this season as they have managed 5 draws and 3 losses while they sit in the relegation zone firmly on 18th position. They host Stade Rennais at the ‘Stade de la Meinau’ next in hopes of getting their first three points of the season and push themselves out of the relegation zone.

FORM – LDDLDDDL

NEXT OPPONENT – STADE RENNAIS FC

CURRENT POSITION – 18TH

  • AS MONACO FC

AS Monaco have swept aside the disappointment of their first five matches that saw them pick up 5 points from a possible 15 but has seemed to be back on track with 3 consecutive wins to get them back on the European spot on the League Table. They welcome struggling Nantes to the Stade Louis II in a match Philippe Clement knows he can’t let any points slip up on.

FORM – WDLDLWWW

NEXT OPPONENT – NANTES FC

CURRENT POSITION – 5TH

  • HSC MONTPELLIER

Montpellier’s season has started on a better note compared to this same stage last season with the team having 4 wins and 4 losses to currently hold the 9th spot in the Ligue 1. They travel to ‘Stadium de Toulouse’ to play Toulouse in the Matchday 9 of the season as they seek to return back to European football in a wait of over 10 years.

FORM – WLLWWLLW

NEXT OPPONENT – TOULOUSE FC

CURRENT POSITION – 9TH

  • OGC NICE

With just 2 wins in all competitions all season (10 matches) and only 6 goals scored in all competitions (4 in Ligue 1, 2 in Conference League), it’s safe to say Nice are having a very torrid time lately and that could even get more worse as they travel to the ‘Parc Des Princes’ to play League Leaders – Paris Saint Germain. With the current form of their opponents, they know it would take nothing but a miracle to steal any points from this encounter with their UEFA Conference League encounter aganist Czech side – Slovacko just around the corner.

FORM – DDLLWLWL

NEXT OPPONENT – PARIS SAINT GERMAIN

CURRENT POSITION – 13TH POSITION

  • OLYMPIQUE LYONNAIS

The 2022/2023 season started in glamour and spectacle for Olympique Lyonnais who won 4 of their first 5 matches and picking up 13 points of a possible 15. The next 3 matches after that has been the direct opposite of the kind of form they started the season with losing to Lorient, AS Monaco and PSG in the League. They travel to face RC Lens in the League.

FORM – WWDWWLLL

NEXT OPPONENT – RC LENS

CURRENT POSITION – 6TH

  • ES TROYES

After opening their 2022/2023 League account with 3 straight losses, Troyes have managed to find a bit of consistency with the team winning 3 of her last matches and drawing once with those results lifting them out of the relegation spot and into the top half of the table. They play Stade Reims next in a cagey League encounter where 3 points would be the perfect gift for the Matchday.

FORM – LLLWWDLW

NEXT OPPONENT – STADE DE REIMS

CURRENT POSITION – 10TH

  • OLYMPIQUE MARSEILLE

Olympique Marseille have enjoyed one of their best starts to a League campaign in a long while and would look to push Paris Saint Germain to the limit as they would very well attempt to wrestle the title out of Paris Saint Germain. With 6 wins and 2 draws thus far, Les Olympiens (The Olympians) are in a good run of form that would once again be tested when they travel to face SCO Angers.

FORM – WDWWWWWD

NEXT OPPONENT – SCO ANGERS

CURRENT POSITION – 2ND

  • AJ AUXERRE

With 4 straight losses and 19 goals conceded (League high), AJ Auxerre have seemed to lose the swagger they started the season with as their recent woes have seen them drop to 16th place on the Ligue 1 table. They would be hoping the International Break would give them enough time to rest as they seek to return back to their previous form and a visit from Stade Brestois looks like the perfect way to go.

FORM – LDWWLLLL

NEXT OPPONENT – STADE BRESTOIS

CURRENT POSITION – 16TH

  • PARIS SAINT GERMAIN

Christophe Galtier and his PSG team have been in sublime form with 7 wins and 1 draw while currently boasting of the competition’s best offensive side and best defensive side scoring 26 goals and conceding just 4 goals in the League. Their European form too is not left out having notched 2 wins in two games to still remain unbeaten in all competitions this season. They welcome OGC Nice in a home clash they have sights on winning especially with the remarkable form of their front trio.

FORM – WWDWWWWW

NEXT OPPONENT – OGC NICE

CURRENT POSITION – 1ST

The French Ligue 1 resumes on Friday as the usual excitement that comes with it lights up our weekends.
