Nigeria finally got the first win of new coach Jose Peseiro on Thursday after defeating Sierra Leone 2-1 to begin the African Cup of Nations 2023 qualifiers with a win.
Though friendly games, Jose Peseiro started his reign as Super Eagles coach with back to back defeats first against Mexico and then Ecuador in USA before facing Sierra Leone in the first competitive game.
Sierra Leone went ahead in the 11th minute after Jonathan Morsay put the visitor ahead but an immediate response from the Nigeria side saw Alex Iwobi play a clean ball to the bottom left corner and Victor Osimhen, who was absent for both friendly games, put Nigeria ahead minutes later to seal the first half and what was the winner.
With Guinea-Bissau defeating São Tomé and Príncipe 5-1, the Super Eagles stay in second in Group A, behind on goal difference, with Sierra Leone third and São Tomé bottom.
The Super Eagles next face São Tomé and Príncipe in Morocco on Tuesday, 13th June, 2022.
